The Future of EA SPORTS Active

Posted on Mar 9, 2010 by EA SPORTS Active Girl

Big news today – this fall, EA SPORTS Active 2 will be coming at ya on the Wii, PS3, iPhone and iPod touch. Not only will EA SPORTS Active be expanding to other platforms but the new fitness program will feature a wireless control system which will make it that much easier to get a great workout.

There will be leg and arm straps with motion sensors along with a heart rate monitor. The heart rate monitor will be able to capture intensity and will provide constant monitoring throughout your workout. Both the heart rate monitor and the motion sensor peripherals are such exciting innovations and it’s really going to change the way you workout at home.

There’s also going to be a new online destination where you will be able to track your workout data and share it with the rest of the community! It’s going to be a one-stop-shop for all your health and fitness needs. Those who will be using EA SPORTS Active 2 on the PS3 will also be able to download new workouts and exercises.

We all know that exercise is something that should be a regular part of your life and not something that you do once in a while. With EA SPORTS Active 2 we want to do more than challenge you to exercise for a few weeks. We want you to embark on a healthy new way of living. That’s why there will be a 9-week total body conditioning program. This new program will help you stay motivated and allow you to track your fitness goals.

Although EA SPORTS Active 2 is not coming out until the fall, we wanted to share this info with you as soon as we were able to. The future of EA SPORTS Active is really exciting!

I can’t wait for you to experience it.

If you also dislike EA's decision not to have downloadable content (exercises & routines) on the wii version of the game (yet the ps3 version will have it), please join this facebook group: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?v=info&gid=381723838827

I am VERY excited about this! I own both a PS3 and a Wii but I'll be getting this for the PS3 solely for the purpose of downloading new exercises. I think that's such a brilliant idea to help keep things interesting. I do hope these downloadable exercises are free, or at least bundled together for a reasonable price. The new arm and leg straps look so much sturdier than the originals and being able to work out hands free will be great. Sometimes holding the controllers and the weight band straps hurt my palms. I just recently started my second 6 week challenge and was worried that by the end of it I'd be bored of it, maybe bored enough to back to the first Active to start another 30 day challenge. But news of this 2.0 coming has really bolstered my interest!

Will the iPhone app be able to track activity independently from the console game and report it to the website, too? I'd like to combine the game and my regular running work-out and track them together. Will the heart rate monitor work with the iPhone? I love the Wii and all, but I'm thrilled that this is coming to the PS3! Can't get here fast enough. Any tie-in with Sony's "Arc" hardware?

I agree with everything wesleyh said. Personally, this seems like a very odd announcement. It looks like the Wii version will have everything that the PS3 version has, except the PS3 version will have downloadable workouts and exercises. And presumably, the PS3 version will have better graphics. So EA builds up a user base on the Wii and then makes a sequel were the Wii version is the inferior version? In my opinion, the millions of people who have supported the EA active brand on the Wii deserve to have the best version available.

That all sounds very good, but I do have a couple of concerns / questions: 1) Will downloadable exercises only be for the PS3 version? This franchise was born on wii. It would be a real shame not to have that feature on the wii as well. And don't blame it on the wii, guitar hero and others have downloadable content, this can be done quite easily via a SD card. Or is this just a miscommunication? 2) Price. A good heart rate monitor costs a lot of money, so I'm not sure if the one that will be included will be very accurate. Well, as long as it's in the ballpark I suppose that's ok. 3) Xbox 360. Why no xbox version? Or are you going to have a special "natal" version for xbox? 4) Accuracy. What technology is in these leg and arm straps? Is it a simple gyro? Or does it contain technology that even the wiimote does not have (and the wii motion plus) Thank you for your time!

It would be great if the new version could have a "vacation/sick" mode. There are times when you are away from your Wii for a week and have to miss out on home workouts. With the new 9 week challenge, this would be a great feature. Also, if there was a way you could program if you were wearing hand weights and the lbs they were, and the color of the resistance band you were using, if you are using a balance board riser, etc. for more acurate results reporting that would be a nice feature although ultimately just a frill. Wi-Fi would be great too, so you could meet people to work out with, maybe in a forum or on "the island". This is my favorite workout program to date. Great job! Can't wait for the new version, I WILL be getting it :)
